Ingredients:

  • 500g fresh white fish
  • 4 limes (to taste)
  • A pinch of coarse salt (or crushed rock salt)
  • Fine salt to taste
  • 3 red chili peppers (dedo-de-moça)
  • 1 aromatic pepper (optional)
  • 1 large red onion
  • Cilantro to taste (or parsley, if you prefer)

Directions:

  1. Cut the fish fillets into small cubes (1.5 cm).
  2. Place the fish in a bowl, add a pinch of coarse salt, and let it release some water.
  3. Squeeze the limes and pour the juice over the fish (do not over-squeeze to avoid bitterness).
  4. Slice the onion into thin rings. Use a slicer if preferred.
  5. Chop the peppers into small pieces (remove the seeds for less heat, if desired).
  6. Add chopped cilantro (or parsley, if preferred).
  7. Mix well, season with fine salt to taste, and keep refrigerated.

Suggested fish: Tilapia.

Additional Information

  • Use fish purchased the same day and keep it refrigerated until use.
  • If you don’t like spiciness, replace the chili peppers with chopped red bell pepper.
  • For a special touch, add a bit of grated ginger.
